Child Safety

As a member of the British Blinds and Shutters Association, Stevens (Scotland) Ltd support fully the ‘Make it Safe’ campaign initiated by our trade association.

The Make it Safe campaign from the BBSA promotes window blind safety in all homes, public buildings and other environments where babies and young children may be present. The message is to ‘reduce the risk from looped blind cords and chains’.

As a supplier to the trade, we promote Child Safe by design systems such as INTU and Perfect Fit as well as child safe by design operation methods including Motorised blinds, Wand and SmartCord options. These blinds would all remove any potential hanging cords or chains.

We are supporting Child Safety Week 2023

Make sure all cords and chains are always secured out of reach of babies and young children. Do not tie cords or chains together. Make sure cords or chains do not twist and create a loop.

Move beds, cots, highchairs and playpens away from window covering cords and chains.

Move furniture away from window covering cords and chains as children love to climb.

We suggest that our trade customers warn their customers that blind cords and chains can pose a risk for babies, children and vulnerable people who could injure or even strangle themselves on the hanging looped cords.

You can recommend a child safe by design product where suitable, and then also ensure on standard operation blinds that you follow the criteria and ensure all blinds you fit are meeting the legal requirements.

The basic Safety requirements are as follows:

  1. Make sure all cords are out of reach.
  2. Do not place your child’s cot, bed, highchair or playpen near to a window blind.
  3. Do not put sofas, chairs, tables, shelves or bookcases near to a window blind, as children love to climb.
